Miki “MIKI-CHANG” Higashino

Miki “MIKI-CHANG” Higashino is a renowned Japanese composer best known for her contributions to the video game industry, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s. Born on January 1, 1965, in Japan, Higashino began her career at Konami while she was a first-year music university student. She quickly gained recognition for her work on early arcade games, with her first major project being Gradius/Nemesis (1985).

Higashino’s talent shone through in her work on Salamander (1986), the spin-off to Gradius. Her compositions for Salamander were groundbreaking, blending fast-paced, energetic tracks with more atmospheric, ambient pieces. These soundtracks were integral to creating the intense and immersive experiences that Konami’s shooters became known for.

In addition to her work on arcade titles, Higashino made significant contributions to the music of games for the MSX. She composed for several MSX titles, including Yie Ar Kung-Fu (1985) and Knightmare (1986). Her music for these games demonstrated her versatility, ranging from catchy, upbeat themes to more complex and layered compositions that pushed the technical limits of the MSX hardware.

Higashino’s most acclaimed work came with the Suikoden series, particularly Suikoden (1995) and Suikoden II (1998). Her compositions for these games are celebrated not only for their rich, emotive quality but also for incorporating instruments from Middle Eastern, Celtic, and other ethnic musical traditions from around the world. The Suikoden II soundtrack, in particular, is often hailed as one of the finest in video game history.

After the success of Suikoden II, Higashino gradually stepped back from the industry, making her last major contribution to Genso Suikogaiden Vol. 1 in 2000. She then left Konami and retired from full-time composing. Despite her departure from the industry, her work continues to be highly influential, and she is remembered as one of the pioneers of video game music composition.
